The Cuba of Palermo

On the south side of the main street Calatafimi lies the Cuba, a fine rectangular-shaped building, tall and compact, which stands on the place where a huge Arab Norman pavilion once stood, which was ordered by William II. The name of the building probably comes from the Arab world Ka’aba (cube).

Later in centuries the building was used as a lazaret and as headquarter of the Bourbon chivalry. Inside the building are visible in various points the mugarnas, which are wall decorations made with chalk. Originally the palace was supposed to be surrounded by an artificial lake, as a model present in one of the halls proves.
