By boat or hydrofoil
The Aeolian islands
The Aeolian islands are connected with Naples through Snav, Siremar and Alilauro (this last one also offers an integrated bus+ hydrofoil service in summer. From Rome until the port of Naples by bus, then by boat to the Sicilian archipelago); with Reggio Calabria through the hydrofoils of Ustica Lines, with Palermo and Cefalù through Ustica Lines, with Milazzo through Ustica Lines and NGI (Navigazione Generale Italiana). Not all these lines reach all the islands. In this case it will be necessary to change ferry in Lipari or Salina.
Ustica is served daily through the company Siremar, which connects the island with Palermo 4 times per day in summer, and 2-3 times during the rest of the year. From June to September there is also the hydrofoil of the Ustica Lines, which goes from Naples to Trapani, via Ustica and the Egadi Islands.
The Egadi islands
The Egadi islands (Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo) are served numerous times per day by the company Ustica Lines (going to and from Trapani) and the company Traghetti delle Isole, and to Marsala through the Ustica Lines; in summer the Egadi islands are also connected with Naples and Ustica through the Ustica Lines, going from Naples to Trapani. Pantelleria is connected daily with Trapani through the company Traghetti delle Isole and Siremar.
The Pelagie islands
The Pelagie islands (Linosa and Lampedusa) can be reached from Porto Empedocle by ferry boat with the company Siremar, and from 15th June to 15th September with the hydrofoil of the company Ustica Lines. We recommend this solution, at least for the onward journey, as an alternative to the ferry boats which depart from Porto Empedocle at midnight. In fact, not only there are frequent delays, but these ferry boats are very small and overcrowded, and you might end up sleeping in claustrophobic couchettes or in the uncomfortable air type seats. On the contrary, the return journey from Sicily always takes place during the day, so you can stay more comfortably on the deck.
