San Giovanni degli Eremiti of Palermo

San Giovanni degli Eremiti is a beautiful church built in 1132 on the ruins of an ancient mosque, which is still visible in a part of the building.

The church represents one of the finest examples of the Norman art inspired by the Arab style. The roof is made up of 5 red chapels, while behind the building lies a beautiful cloister with an orange grove, jasmines, mimosas, roses and exotic plants.

This is one of the quietest corners of the city, and was the favourite spot of Ruggero II.
