To/from the airport

If you plan to visit only the main cities, we discourage from the use of your own car; whereas the private vehicle is highly recommended if you travel along the coast, inland or through various archaeological sites. You may rent a car at your arrival, or better prior to departure, in order to get better offers and wider choice. The main airports of Palermo, Trapani and Catania are all provided with car rental companies.

The International airport Falcone-Borsellino in Palermo and Birgi (Trapani) are served by highway A29 (toll free). The highway begins in Palermo and follows two directions: one southward until Mazara del Vallo and the other one westward to Trapani, with a further branch in proximity of Dattilo leading to the airport just a few kilometres south of the city.

The international airport Fontanarossa of Catania lies in proximity of the last exit of highway A19 (toll free), connecting Catania and Palermo via Enna. If you are headed northward along the coast, the ring road of Catania meets with toll highway A18. The A18 follows the coast via Messina until it conveys into A19.

How to reach the cities from the airport by public transports:

The airport Falcone-Borsellino in Punta Raisi lies 35 km west of Palermo and is connected with the city through the railway. The journey takes 45’, and the service operates from 5.00 am to 24 pm. There is also a bus service operating between the airport and the train station, with some stops in the city centre. The journey takes approximately 1 h, and the service operates between 5 am and 24 pm, or in coincidence with the last arrival flights. Alternatively you can take a taxi, although they are quite expensive. The private bus company Segesta operates numerous daily links to Trapani (1h 10′).

The airport of Birgi, 16 km south of Trapani, is connected with the city by means of the Ast bus (about 20’). The terminal stop is in Piazza Montalto. Bus times operate in connection with the scheduled flights. Catania airport Fontanarossa lies 7 km south-west of the city, and is connected with the city centre by a shuttle service operated by Alibus(bus n. 457), terminating at the railway station, while the main seaside resorts on the east coast (Messina, Taormina, Siracusa) can be reached by bus through numerous regional companies.
