The popular borough of Albergheria is a mix of sumptuous palaces overlooking via Maqueda, like Santa Croce Palace, and narrow streets behind via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Many of these streets make up the part of the city which was destroyed by the air raids of the Second World War, and was never to be rebuilt. This area includes the university and a student house, in the middle of the historical borough Ballarò, which in summer serves as a youth hostel managed by a cooperative of young people. Ballarò is also the place where one of the daily markets of Palermo takes place, less famous but more authentic than the Vucciria market.
The north-west corner of the Albergheria is bordered by two of the finest buildings of Palermo: San Giovanni degli Eremiti and the Norman Palace.
