Climate and weather in Sicily

The peculiar Sicilian summer weather makes the island more similar to Africa rather than Europe. The summer heat is generally dry instead of sultry, so the high temperatures are more bearable than in the rest of the peninsula. The very low quantity of rain in the summer months is a good incentive for beach lovers, but not a good thing for the Sicilians, who have to deal with a chronic lack of water.
If you plan to include sea resorts or archaeological sites in your itinerary, you’d better consider visiting Sicily outside the high season, in spring or autumn, when the climate is warm (in Lampedusa you can bathe from April until late October, some say even in November…), and the tourist destinations are quieter and cheaper (although prices are in general much cheaper than in the rest of Italy). Spring represents for many reasons the best period of the year, with flowers in bloom filling the landscape and emanating charming essences all around. In Easter numerous traditional feasts take place in the towns and villages of the island, a good chance to taste the gastronomic specialties bound to this religious recurrence. For those who prefer winter time, the climate on the coast is still very mild, and allows to spend some hours in the open air to visit archaeological sites and cities, especially on the southern coast. The highest peaks of the mountain chains and the volcano Etna are often covered with snow, and there are some ski resorts, whereas the zone right behind the Tyrrhenian coast and near Messina are quite rainy.
As for the smaller islands, be aware that ferry boat connections are less frequent in low season, and temporary interruptions of service may often occur due to bad weather conditions.
