How to get to Sicily by car
For those arriving from North Italy, Sicily can be reached by highway A1 until Naples (main distances: Milan-Naples 770 km; toll € 44,10; oil cost between € 70 and € 120 according to the model of car).
From Naples the A3 takes to the boarding ports of Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria (497 km; toll free highway; oil cost between € 60 and € 100 according to the car model). Here you can embark on the ferry to Messina.
Those arriving from central and South Italy can choose between the A1-A3, or A14 until Taranto, driving along the ionic shoreline until Permuta, then getting back inland to meet again highway A3. Travelling by car in high season may be stressful in this part of Italy. Especially those arriving from North and central Italy should prefer one of the numerous ferries which connect the Tyrrhenian coast to Sicily. Some of these companies also reach the main smaller islands, and if you book in advance you can find some very cheap fares for transportation of private vehicles.
