How to reach Sicily by sea

If you want to bring your own car on the island from other Italian regions, the best solution is by ferry boat. The main companies offer transportation of private vehicles at very cheap fares, starting from 1 to 5 Euro, and some discounted travel tariffs, but to take advantage of such discounts and special offers you have to book quite in advance. Hydrofoils for passengers are faster but a bit more expensive.
There a re numerous opportunities to reach the main ports of Sicily or directly the Aeolian and Egadi islands or Ustica.
Palermo is connected with Genoa (everyday), Livorno (tue, thur, sat. in direction Palermo; tue., wed., fri. in direction Livorno), Civitavecchia (mon., wed., fri., in direction Palermo; tue., thur., sat., in direction Civitavecchia), through the company Grandi Navi Veloci; with Salerno through Grimaldi Ferries;  with Civitavecchia and Naples through Snav; with  Naples and Cagliari through Tirrenia. Also, by this year a new daily connection has been activated from 1st July to 30th September between Palermo (Termini Imerese) and Genoa (Voltri) through the company         T-Link (a subsidiary of Moby Lines).
Catania is connected with Civitavecchia and Genoa through  Grimaldi Lines; with Naples through TTT Lines.
Trapani is connected with Civitavecchia through Grimaldi Lines; with Cagliari through Tirrenia; with Livorno through Ustica Lines and with Naples through the hydrofoils of Ustica Lines via Ustica, Favignana and Lèvanzo.
Milazzo is connected with Naples through Siremar, via the Aeolian islands. The Aeolian islands can be reached from Milazzo either with company Siremar, Ustica Lines and NGI (Navigazione Generale Italiana).
The Aeolian islands are connected with Naples through Snav,  Siremar and Alilauro (this last one also offers an integrated bus+ hydrofoil service in summer. From Rome until the port of Naples by bus, then by boat to the Sicilian archipelago.) The hydrofoils of the company Ustica Lines offer a connection service from/to Reggio Calabria. Not all these companies call at all islands. Sometimes it is necessary to change ferry in some intermediary ports.
