Moving around Sicily

Sicily is one of the biggest islands of the Mediterranean, and the distances between the various cities require long hours journey by car or by bus, even more if you choose to travel by train, since the train stations are usually situated in isolated villages outside the main cities. In case you need to change train or bus, you may even take 5 or 6 hours to run a distance of 50 km, since the interchange connections are not scheduled to fit with another. So you’d better plan your travels in order to avoid loss of time and long waiting in far away train and bus stations. If you have to move from one side to the other of the island, in general the itineraries along the coast are quicker, whereas it might take an entire day to cross the inland north-  south or east-west. Numerous ferry boats and hydrofoils reach the smaller islands, and some of them have direct connections with the dryland. Pantelleria and Lampedusa can be also reached by plane with regional flights from Palermo.
