How to reach Sicily by car or bike

The two or four wheels are an absolutely indispensable mean to visit certain parts of Sicily and the archaeological sites, which are situated in isolated areas, badly served by public transports.
In cities like Palermo, Messina, Catania we strongly recommend to leave your car in a secured car park and proceed by public transport.
The rest of the island can be enjoyed and discovered with a private vehicle. The Tyrrhenian shoreline is connected from Messina to Trapani through the toll highway A20 until Buonfornello, in proximity of the archaeological site of Imera. From A19 to Palermo and from A29 from Palermo to Trapani/Mazara del Vallo (both toll free); from Messina the highway A18 (with toll) until Catania, and from Catania the highway A19 which winds through the inland and back on the coast in proximity of Buonfornello. A new leg of the highway is under construction, which will connect Siracusa with Gela.
Other important roads are the southern state road connecting Trapani and Siracusa, the state road 417 from Catania to Gela and the state road 189 Palermo-Agrigento; all of them allow to cover remarkable lengths in acceptable times.
On the mountains and in the rural areas of the inland the roads may be tortuous, requiring longer times for transit. Just like in the rest of Italy, many drivers hold a hazardous behaviour, ignoring street signals and speed limits, therefore we recommend to use the maximum care and prudence.
