How to move around Sicily by train

Though trains are not ideal to move around if you have just a few days available, still they remain  the most comfortable way to move along the Tyrrhenian and Ionic coast until Siracusa. Moreover, all Sicilian provinces are served by the railway. Here are a few examples of distances and prices:
The path between Palermo and Messina takes approximately 3 h 30’ , depending on the stops. Ticket price: € 11,30.  Intercity trains in this case are not convenient, since they take the same time but cost more (about € 24,00 in first class and € 18,00 in second class).
The journey Messina-Siracusa with regional trains takes between 2h 45' and 3h 30',  and the ticket costs € 9,25.  Intercity trains take 2h 30' to 2h 40' and the ticket costs € 14,50 and € 19,50 respectively for first and second class. Both line routes are also served by express trains coming from continental Italy, but they suffer from chronic delays, so try to avoid them unless they are ready for departure when you arrive at the station.
