The Vucciria of Palermo

Situated East of via Roma and north of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the Vucciria is best known for its market, one of the must see places if you look for something picturesque, lively and typical. In fact, the market is set in a hidden position on a little square surrounded by tortuous lanes full of shops.
Getting out of the charming lanes of the Vucciria in direction north you will meet the 18th century church of San Domenico. The pastry shop opposite the church sells some very good cannoli ! The complex hosts the Museum of Renaissance and the Oratory of the Rosary of San Domenico.  Further on stands the church of Sant'Ignazio all'Olivello and the beautiful  Archaeological Regional Museum, with finds and manufactures from all the most important Neolithic, Roman, Carthaginian and Greek sites of the island.
East of via Roma and the market is the Cala, the old fisherman port which serves today as a tourist port. The area is unfortunately quite decadent, but a recovery project has been recently planned to revitalise this urban area.
