The Norman Palace of Palermo

Known as the Royal Palace, the building was ordered by Ruggero II and was raised up on the foundations of an ancient Saracen palace. In the 17th century the Spanish added the facade and most of the inner spaces. The entrance for guided visits is from Piazza Indipendenza, where the magnificent Ruggero Hall and the Palatine Chapel can be seen.
The Ruggero Hall is a triumph of mosaics covering all walls, vaults and arches, which represent plants, animals and ornamental motifs of Islamic tradition.

The Palatine Chapel is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, a perfect fusion of Norman, Arab, Byzantine and Romanic style. Not to be missed.
